The traditional tile (kaashi) and tile-work (kaashi-kaari) in the indigenous architecture of Iran are produced on baked clay pieces (-- by enameling the surface of a clay piece and baking it). Although a modernization has brought a ceramic-type tiles, which at present are being used for the exterior walls of the bath rooms and kitchens in modern apartments, the traditional tiles, or the enameled, baked-clay tiles, for centuries have been used for both a decoration as well as a protection of domes from a damage by rain water. There are four types of traditional tiles: 1) the kaashee paraani [a transl.: the peeling of the enameled surface of a tile], 2) the tak-rang ( the single-pieced, single-colored) tiles, 3) the hafftt-rang ( the single-pieced, seven-colored) tiles, and 4) the mo'arr-raq ( the multi-pieced, multi-colored) tile-work.A traditional tile-work (kaashi-kaari) is a hand-made, art work because the pieces of tiles are inlaid on the surface of the exterior or interior of a wall or a dome by hand, For this reason, eachmo'arr-raq tile-work in Iran is a unique art work that is produced for a building based on a design peculiar for that building. Since they are not a factory-made tiles, they are not mass produced.A traditional tile-work in a historic building in Iran, therefore, cannot be found in another building; and no two tile-works are the same. Each tile-work is like an original painting by an artist.The present work is a pictorial introduction of the above four types of traditional tiles and tile-works, in the indigenous architecture of Iran, which represent the artistic talents of different schools of arts and architecture in Iran, especially the Isfahaan school.This volume will be part of the series about the indigenous architecture of Iran. The series consists of two major subjects: 1) Main or Prime Features of the Indigenous Architecture in Iran (I.e., traditional houses, traditional doors, koochehes or narrow alleyways, clay buttresses, maj-moo'ah or complex and Jam'a mosques, traditional tiles and tile-works, baadgeirs, bridges, clay castles, caravansaries, palaces) and 2) Historic cities of Iran (i.e., Kaashaan, Naaein, Kermaan City, Shiraaz, Isfahaan City, and Yazd City). [Note: an estimated costs for the production of the series that is mentioned in the preface of this volume is related to the production and completion of the 20 volumes of the series not to the single volume of Traditional Tiles].
